Guadalajara
a
City of Culture and Contrast
Guadalajara,
capital of the state of Jalisco, is a city of contrast; it is
the soul of the Mexican spirit. In this lovely place, the traditional
is mixed with the modern, the advantages and comfort of a big
city abide side by side with the tranquil life of the provinces.
Founded
in 1542 by Nuño de Guzmán, this beautiful city
of fountains and flowers is located 5,000 feet above the sea
level on the western portion of México's Central Plateau.
With the latitude of Hawaii, Guadalajara's near-perfect climate-along
with its endless architectural displays, rich culture and friendly
people-has attracted Americans by the thousands. The largest
group of U.S. citizens residing permanently outside the United
States lives in or near Guadalajara.
Today Guadalajara
is the second largest city in México not only because
of the number of inhabitants (6 million) but also because of
its enormous commercial importance in the economic development
of the country.
Many of
the city's original buildings and gardens-some now hundreds
of years old-are still in use. Flowers such as carnations, jasmine, violets,
and Castile roses abound, and lemon, orange, and pomegranate
groves flourish. Tree-lined boulevards and shaded avenues crisscross
this city.
The downtown
section of Guadalajara is characterized by four public squares
in the form of a latin cross, the center of which is the Cathedral,
completed in 1618. The Culture Center, the Experimental Theater,
the magnificent Plaza Juárez, the huge Libertad Marketpalce,
the Craftsmen's Center and various other buildings give Guadalajara
the contrast of a modern city growing rapidly but not losing
the traditional qualities, provincial flavor, and regal appearance
that make it one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
The
cuisine surprises many visitors who expected the typical "Mexican"
dishes found throughout the United States. Genuine Mexican cuisine
here is temptingly diverse, reflecting the variety of cultures
that have influenced the character of Guadalajara over the centuries.
