A great necessity for physicians is the ability to communicate with their patient. Communication includes an understanding of the language and the culture. It is much easier and faster for a healthcare provider to evaluate a Spanish-speaking patient without the necessity of seeking an appropriate interpreter if they can communicate with them. This eliminates the fear of mistranslation and misinterpretation and of course, mis-diagnosis.
Since 1935, the UAG School of Medicine has educated and trained more than 14,000 bilingual/bicultural US physicians. They are licensed to practice in all fields and in all 50 states. Their ability to communicate with their Spanish-speaking patients is a plus in their day-to-day practice. It also provides a great advantage to our graduates when applying for residency spots.
If you are in a health service area or profession, it is important to be able to understand your patients in their language and their culture. Students that attend our Medical Spanish Program do so through our Program of Medicine in the Community (PMC)
