Medical School Curriculum | UAG School of Medicine

UAG CURRICULUM

The integrated systems-based curriculum at UAG is comparable to that of a top-tier medical school in the United States.

The curriculum at UAG School of Medicine is built on an integrated system-based approach that provides a comprehensive understanding of human biology and disease processes. The student-centered curriculum will introduce students to issues from different perspectives, stressing integrative thinking and facilitating the development of critical thinking more effectively.

This method also combines the basic and clinical sciences, resulting in a higher development of the essential abilities required for medical practice.

MS1

Students will learn the fundamentals of the human body using an innovative systems-based approach. For each organ system, each block will focus on the core topics of Genetics, Embryology, Histology, Biochemistry, Physiology, and Pathology.

During Year 1, students will have the opportunity to practice with live patients as part of our Medicine in the Community Program, which provides quality medical care to underserved in and around Guadalajara.

MS2

Year 2 at UAG School of Medicine will focus on a student's preparation for clinical clerkships. Continuously applying the information being taught to the clinical setting, while integrating new and previously encountered information to build a polished integrated knowledge base.

Students will become acquainted with the clinical skills required to physically explore, address, diagnose, and manage the patient.

MS3

Year 3 consists of 48 weeks of clinical clerkships designed to teach medical students the fundamentals of clinical examination, evaluation, and care delivery.

The medical student will interact with actual patients during the Clinical Clerkships, but their evaluations and recommendations will be reviewed and approved by more senior physicians. The students are expected to master the knowledge required to successfully treat patients and  expected to assume the role of a physician.

MS4

The fourth year, which consists of an additional 44 weeks of elective clerkships, accounts for one-quarter of their medical education. It is critical because it is the critical time for solidifying and broadening the foundations laid in the first three years.

Furthermore, it is important for reasons other than immediate educational needs: it is time to better understand residency options and improve the student's opportunities for the transition to post-graduate years.

SMALL-GROUP LEARNING
Part of the UAG SOM medical curriculum consists of small group sessions designed to enhance. Small group sessions are an essential part of the Basic Sciences curriculum and serve to expose students to concepts from multiple perspectives, emphasizing integrative thinking. Small group work helps by:

 1) Reinforcing basic science content.

2) Helping to place that content into an appropriate clinical context.

3) Providing students with the opportunity to work collaboratively with and learn from their peers; and

4) Allowing for a high degree of student-faculty contact.

The UAG SOM model of small group learning is primarily based on a form of problem-based learning known as “case-based” learning, but the way in which small groups are structured varies from course to course. Students come together to discuss the case, and their solutions, with their peers and with the faculty.
